Backwards planning (i.e. understanding by design) is the curriculum approach utilized by the New York City Department of Education. It comprises establishing learning goals and then aligning curriculum, instruction and assessment with those goals. The process begins by defining the desired learning outcomes and the New York City standards associated with them. It follows by designing the curriculum and instructional design in order to make them consistent with the expected outcomes. Finally, it involves identifying a series of assessment tools to monitor students’ progress towards the learning goals. Along these lines, assessment must be formative (i.e. over the whole learning process) as well as summative (i.e. at the end of the activity). In each chapter teachers will find examples of lesson plans that integrate the resource text Go Wild in New York City into the science curriculum using a Backwards Planning approach.
